GHANA
Since 2011, Kambia, alongside our partner Global Brigades, has served communities across the Central Region of Ghana. Over the years, we have built deep relationships and partnerships with the Fante people of southern Ghana and begun implementing our Holistic Model of development – including health, WASH and economic development programs. In addition to the Fante language, many locals speak English, the country’s national language. Ghanaians are known for their kindness, joyfulness, peacefulness and welcoming nature. Ghana maintains a stable government and welcomes tourists from around the world. The culture, as well as the natural beauty of the region, leaves visitors feeling inspired and alive in a new way.
Community Partners and Projects
After thorough research and communication with the Ghanaian government, the Central Region, along the country’s southern coastline, was identified as one of the highest need areas and the region that would most benefit from Kambia’s programs. To improve access to healthcare, we provide medical clinics that take place in public Ministry of Health clinics. In addition to providing consultations and medications, these clinics also provide public health workshops and promote the National Health Insurance Scheme. For economic development, we collaborate with both private and government organizations to create jobs by promoting and expanding local businesses. We support community-owned banks that provide access to loans while re-circulating loan repayments back into the community bank for future loans.
To combat common illnesses such as diarrhea, parasite and cholera, we also work with communities, the Ghana Water Company, Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) and other partners to construct pour-flush toilets, hand-washing stations and potable water systems.
We work with 85 partner communities that include more than 744,000 people.
Our community partners consist entirely of native Fante people who still wear traditional clothes and speak their native language. A number of the communities lie directly on the coast and focus on fishing while others are in the hills inland and primarily work in agriculture, including the propagation of cassava, plantain and other staple crops. The communities are a mix of Christian, Muslim and indigenous spirituality, and are very open and welcoming to all people.
Accommodations, Logistics, and Food
Our professional and experienced staff will meet you at the Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in the capital city of Accra upon arrival and take you directly to your beautiful accommodations at one of our “home-base” sites in the Central Region. At the accommodations, you will enjoy authentic local cuisine and our staff will orient you to the country and the work you will be doing.
The accommodations are comfortable and safe and allow you and your team to feel at home. Kambia provides 24-hour security as well as on-site staff to take care of any needs.
During your visits to the community, our professional drivers will transport you safely and our coordinators will ensure that you have everything that you need.
Our Staff
Kambia’s team of local staff including medical professionals, paramedics, drivers, cooks and lodging managers are present throughout each program and ensure that you are always supported and cared for. With more than 20 years of experience, our team will welcome you to Ghana and introduce you to our amazing community partners.
In addition to excellent service staff, we employ a full-time team of professional health and economic development professionals that make sure the work that you do is impactful and sustainable. We look forward to meeting you in Ghana!
Cultural Learning
In addition to the high-impact development projects you and your team will undertake, we also want to make sure that you are introduced to Ghanaian culture through authentic and traditional cultural activities. This includes visits to local markets, including the Mankessim market, to experience all of the colors and smells of Ghana and maybe even purchase some gifts to bring home.
You will also be introduced to the world-famous drumming culture of Ghana and will get to experience and even try for yourself some of the traditional music and dance. The culture of Ghana and its people will absolutely be a highlight of the trip.
Enrichment Activities
(OPTIONAL ADD-ON PACKAGES)
After a full week of service work, your group may want to undertake an adventure deeper into the jungle, visit some of the region’s historical sites including the famous Cape Coast Castle or spend an extra day getting to know Accra. Kambia is happy to help organize these (optional) activities for you and your group.
Make sure to organize these activities with the Kambia team when customizing your trip. We look forward to welcoming you to Ghana!
